Introducing the Scandinavian Ceramics Collection
Scandinavian ceramic design: now available with our plant & pot sets shipping nationwide!

Scandinavian ceramics have arrived.

What’s clean, airy, minimal… and cozy? Say hello to Scandinavian ceramic design, the newest collection of sleek modern planters for your indoor greenery.

What is Scandinavian design?

Scandinavian Design is a design movement that emerged in the 1950s and flourished throughout the Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Sweden, & Norway) around the same time mid-century modern styles were taking hold in the United States.

It’s all in the details: Scandinavian ceramic design is all about form + function.

Marked by simplicity, minimalism, and functionality, Scandinavian design brings to mind bright, airy spaces, muted tones and textures, and natural elements like stone and wood. Other features include furniture pieces with simple and clean lines, the use of white negative space, and, inspired by a deep appreciation for nature, plenty of indoor greenery.

Scandinavian ceramic design for your indoor plants

Given Scandinavian design is so deeply inspired by natural beauty, it is no surprise that this style of ceramic so wonderfully complements indoor plants. Simple, clean lines and soft, neutral colors bring out the best in the foliage of our favorite houseplants, making bright tones pop and deeper shades glow. And when it comes to Scandinavian design, form never compromises function: 100% waterproof and complete with a deep overflow saucer, they are designed for optimal health of your indoor plants.

As a cook, the most important thing for me was a nice sized kitchen, with a stove that could withstand my constant abuse and enough room for a big dining room table. Having people over and being able to cook and serve family style is always priority number one. That being said, if I were going to do it all over again, I'd focus more heavily on the second most important element... natural light! I can usually be found in front of my apartment on the street, wearing an apron with forks in my back pocket and taking photos of food, looking like a total crazy person because of the lack of natural light inside my place.

What inspires you when you decorate?

I love supporting local artists and more often than not an object will just speak to me and I'll have to have it. Then I take it home, and after putting it in five different locations, I'll find its home. I don't love having a ton of stuff around, I like a clean and easy environment with bold pops of color and lots of food-related adornments.

As a new plant parent Natasha wanted plants she couldn’t kill that also looked cool and modern. She picked out a cute Staghorn Fern, the bubbly Pink Rubber Tree and super resilient Cast Iron Plant.

What are your plant care secrets?

LEON AND GEORGE. Until finding their service I was never able to keep plants happy because I just didn't know how to find the kinds of plants I could keep alive, and how to care for them like tiny silent children. My secret is to follow the instructions to a T and adjust watering based on the seasons, they've really just made it so easy for me!

Real Plants, Real People: Roommates Wren and Jayme
w-j-pothos-kitchen.jpg

Wren and Jayme are friends who love a good theme party. When they found their charming San Francisco apartment, they knew it was a place they could take care of and make their own.

--

How did you know this home was for you?

When we visited the apartment it was empty. They had just re-sealed the floors and there was warm natural light reflecting from everywhere. We sat down in the middle of the floor and it felt comfortable. It was a home we could see ourselves investing in, filling with nice furniture and pieces that would last.

What inspires you when you decorate?

We both like playing with color and themes. One of the first pieces we purchased for the apartment was a shower curtain, which we picked out from Urban Outfitters. As we were browsing a "Welcome to the Jungle" doormat was suggested and that ended up becoming our theme. We eventually added plants, our colorful velvet couches, and fun animal decor.

What are your plant care secrets?

A light touch. They don't need to be bothered all the time, but it does help to have a rhythm. We typically check in on them on Sundays. Being aware when something has changed or seems to be wrong, then testing out adjustments is also something we do. When they get big, you notice them even more, so you can't help but be aware of how they're doing.

Jayme picked a Bird of Paradise as a larger plant that would do well with the bright light in her room.

LA LA Lush: How To Create Lush SoCal Vibes In Your Home
Photo cred: Patina Studios

Capturing the pulse of LA and simplifying it down to just a few adjectives is an impossible task (which is also what makes it magical). Los Angeles is as classic as it is wild, and is a city iconic for being both timeless and trendy all in one.

At Léon & George, we love keeping up with and getting ahead of interior styles –– especially styles that truly encapsulate the essence of our home state of California! As we head into spring, we felt it fitting to capture everything that inspires ‘Lush Living’ –– a SoCal-infused style concept that runs parallel to the interior trends of recent years. Here are our own tips for creating this ornately lavish look in your space!

The Style

Somewhere between boho and mid-century, Lush Living brings outdoor LA vibes in! Using the paradise feels of Rodeo Drive and Venice Beach as its muse, this lush look can be accomplished by mixing a gorgeous palette of contrasting colors, textures, and living elements. Extracting pale pinks from LA's cotton candy skies and the stark, saturated greens from its overarching palm trees, lush living is not only stylish, but it’s also punchy and impactful. And what’s more is it’s easy to emulate as any blush + botanical pairings in a concentrated space can truly establish this look and feel!

How to do it

Texture plays a massive role in creating this look. When choosing fabrics and furniture, consider velvet or velour (that’s right, think 90s revival!). Mid-century modern pieces also go hand-in-hand with this style, and the simple lines, stark edges, and acorn wood coloring will round out any space in a timeless and elegant manner.

Like most styles, color is extremely important. Rich green and pale pink palettes are a great place to start, adding accent items like pillows, rugs, throws, or coffee table reads to your already existing decor.

Even further, the best way to accomplish deep, rich, textured greens in your space is by adding beautiful botanicals. No matter what plants you choose as your statement pieces, all of them will help accomplish this look.

Our plant stylists recommend large-leafed plants like the Bird of Paradise, Monstera Deliciosa, and Fiddle Leaf Fig to create those jungle-like feels, or for a more boho look, the Desert Cactus, Snake Plant, or Zanzibar Gem. The natural greens that indoor plants provide are a vital element of lush living. Don’t be afraid to go overboard either! After all, there is no such thing as too many plants.

Green & Trendy in 2018

In our previous blog (Fresh Us, Fresh You), we talked about how to better yourself in 2018. To further that notion, we’re sticking to our resolution of providing trendy suggestions that can impact your interiors.

Pull from some of this year’s latest trends to set-up the right vibe for your home or office. If you recognize how to work with what you’ve got, while adding statement items where necessary, you too can accomplish the perfect interior harmony.

To help elevate the ordinary in your space, we’ve compiled our 2018 design recommendations from some of the industry’s leading all-stars:

In Vogue, Alex Papachristidis said:

“Green has been missing from the market lately. It’s a color that I love and will always use and I feel it’s making a comeback. It’s such an important color because it brings nature indoors and into the home.”

In Homes to Love, Emma Vidgen writes:

“As our lives become more hectic and reliant on technology, our desire to reconnect with nature and return to a simpler way of life will be reflected in the design and style of our homes.”

In the National, Rin Hamburg suggests you:

“Use plants liberally to inject life into your home, but don’t just stick them anywhere. Create large groupings to turn them into a feature, or even max out with a living wall. Alternatively, think of unusual ways to display your plants – hang them from the ceiling or choose unexpected decorative pots. You can also mirror live plants with touches of botanical prints.”

When revitalizing any space, houseplants are the most direct way to bring nature indoors! A safe place to start is with easy-care plants that fit in even the shadiest of corners in any home or office. Want to be bold? Our large statement plants are an immediate eye-catcher and they make a luscious focal point for any room. Does your apartment lack the floor real estate necessary to house a larger plant? Have no fear - consider some of our NEW tabletop pieces as they are easily workable in confined spaces.

Increasing your collection of greenery is a sure way to re-vamp any interior environment this year! Use the tips we’veBraided Money Tree compiled to help liven up your home or office, after all, when you’re in a positive place, you’re more likely to pollinate others with your vibrance.

Happy decorating!

How the Fiddle-Leaf Fig Became the Year's Must-Have Plant
Fiddle Leaf Fig Tree by Léon & George at Serpentine SF

Fiddle Leaf Fig Tree by Léon & George at Serpentine SF

Move over, mossy terrariums, there's a new plant in charge. The fiddle-leaf fig tree has started popping up in fashion spreads, high-end offices, and just about everywhere in between. The secret to the fiddle's popularity? An Instagram-worthy leaf structure that livens up every space it inhabits.

The New York Times called it "the perfect balance of volume and negative space, structure and whimsy." Today said it was "the plant taking over homes across America." They are go-to fixtures in the offices of luxury retail brands in Paris and San Francisco. And in 2017, the fiddle-leaf fig tree was Léon & George's best-selling plant of the year. Here's what makes it unique.

Why it stands out
The fiddle-leaf fig is a tropical tree native to western Africa. It thrives in warm, wet climates, which can be tricky to replicate indoors. But when potted and cared for, fiddles are long-lasting and vibrant, with broad violin-shaped leaves. They vary in shape and size, each one with its own personality and quirk. Some form tall columns, while others grow like trees, usually between two and six feet tall when potted.

Their full shape is what caught the attention of artists and architects who first used fiddles in their work. Fast-forward a few years, and they are some of the most sought-after plants of the decade. The recent hurricane in Florida, for example, temporarily depleted the supply and led to long waitlists for potted fiddle-leafs across the US.

Care + design: Tips for styling your fiddle
Fiddle-leaf figs photograph beautifully and they add character to any room they're in. But here's the drawback: they can be finicky and definitely require a little TLC. Light pruning will keep them looking fresh and happy -- just like you should feel when you're around them! For basic care, water once a week (less in winter) and spray the leaves regularly to create humidity. More care tips here

When it comes to styling your fiddle, it's all about proportions. To make your plant the center of attention, try dusting the leaves to create a light-catching sheen. You can also trim lower branches to guide the growth up and out. Designers are drawn to fiddles because they are versatile and fit nicely in tight-cornered apartments or open-concept offices. The Léon & George team recommends giving your fiddle at least a foot of clear space in every direction, and pairing it with a sleek architectural planter that will really do it justice.

Last word: Go ahead, fall in love
The fiddle-leaf fig may not be the easiest plant to care for, but that hasn't stopped it from winning the adoration of millions. And as great as it looks in the photos, we promise it'll be even better in person. Ready to join the Fiddle club? The Léon & George team is here to help with more care tips and design pointers to get you started.
