How did you know this home was for you?

Natasha wanted a lush plant as an accent piece in her kitchen, she went with a Cascading Pothos

As a cook, the most important thing for me was a nice sized kitchen, with a stove that could withstand my constant abuse and enough room for a big dining room table. Having people over and being able to cook and serve family style is always priority number one. That being said, if I were going to do it all over again, I'd focus more heavily on the second most important element... natural light! I can usually be found in front of my apartment on the street, wearing an apron with forks in my back pocket and taking photos of food, looking like a total crazy person because of the lack of natural light inside my place.

What inspires you when you decorate?

I love supporting local artists and more often than not an object will just speak to me and I'll have to have it. Then I take it home, and after putting it in five different locations, I'll find its home. I don't love having a ton of stuff around, I like a clean and easy environment with bold pops of color and lots of food-related adornments.

As a new plant parent Natasha wanted plants she couldn’t kill that also looked cool and modern. She picked out a cute Staghorn Fern, the bubbly Pink Rubber Tree and super resilient Cast Iron Plant.

What are your plant care secrets?

LEON AND GEORGE. Until finding their service I was never able to keep plants happy because I just didn't know how to find the kinds of plants I could keep alive, and how to care for them like tiny silent children. My secret is to follow the instructions to a T and adjust watering based on the seasons, they've really just made it so easy for me!

Thoughtful wedding gift ideas, like the Snake Plant and Zanzibar Gem (and perfect for his & hers gifts!)

In search of a unique wedding gift?

Finding the perfect wedding gift is no simple task. You want something both parties will love, and something that is meaningful and will last. Why not give them the unique gift of a potted plant?

In the past, the idea of a potted plant as a wedding gift was a bit unrealistic. Sure, you could pick something beautiful out at the nursery, but then what? Would you need to store it in your home until the time came? How would you get it to them? Giving a plant as a wedding gift simply wasn’t practical.

Luckily for you (and the couple-to-be!), this is no longer the case. Ordering a premium plant and pot set for the newlyweds is as simple as ever, and will undoubtedly make for one of the most cherished wedding gifts they receive.

So, why should you give them a gift that grows? Read on to learn about why plants make the perfect unique wedding gift.

1. They’re Green

And we don’t mean literally. Potted plants are great for the environment, they clean our air, and with just a little TLC, they will last a lifetime.

2. They’re symbolic

Did you know the Braided Money Tree is a symbol of good luck and fortune? The Zanzibar Gem is also known as the “eternity plant”, perfect for wishing the new couple a lifetime of happiness. Or simply find a plant that reminds you of them and give it to them as a symbol of their love.

3. They’ll grow together

Speaking of symbolism, a plant will grow and mature over time, just like the newlywed couple. Give them a gift that grows, and let them grow together.

The Zanzibar Gem, also known as “the eternity plant”, is the perfect gift for a newlywed couple.

4. They’re versatile

The great thing about plants is that they can adapt to so many spaces as the couple’s life together evolves and changes. What may be a gift for their living room may eventually move to an office, or a baby’s nursery.

5. They’re the perfect addition to any home

No matter their taste or style, a plant looks wonderful in any home. Not only does it enhance and elevate any space, but it also brings happiness and joy to anyone who sets eyes upon it. And the best part? Unlike other wedding gifts, this one will not end up in the back of the closet!

So what are you waiting for? Give them a timeless gift that grows.

Stromanthe Triostar Care Guide (AKA Magenta Triostar): Everything You Need To Know
howtocareforstromanthetriostar.jpg

The STROMANTHE TRIOSTAR

AKA stromanthe sanguinea triostar
AKA magenta triostar

A member of the prayer plant family, the Stromanthe Triostar or Magenta Triostar boasts colorful leaves that almost appear to be painted by Mother Nature herself. But though this plant makes for a real head turner, it requires a bit of patience in finding just what it needs in terms of care. Here’s everything you need to know to keep Magenta Triostar plants healthy and growing.

How much light does the Stromanthe Triostar need?

This plant needs bright indirect light to thrive. In fact, it will open and close its leaves throughout the day in response to light! Avoid harsh direct sunlight that may burn your plant’s leaves.

How to water your Stromanthe Triostar

Water about once a week (or more often if environment is very warm) to keep soil evenly moist but never soggy. Mist between waterings to provide humidity.

How fast do stromanthes grow?

In prime conditions, this plant grows relatively quickly and can reach up to one to two feet in height. Fertilize 1-2 times per month in the spring and summer with indoor plant food, or foliar feed year round.

Common problems with the Magenta Triostar

Yellowing or pale leaves - overwatering or insufficient light

  • Symptom - leaves that are an off-white or pale yellow

  • Cause - the soil has been drenched or waterlogged

  • Remedy - aerate the soil, or simply hold off until the plant dries out a bit until the next watering. If it is very damaged, you may need to repot.

Read more here about yellow or pale leaves on the Stromanthe Triostar.

Yellowing, browning and/or crispy edges - underwatering

  • Symptom - edges that turn brown or yellow with a crispy touch to them

  • Cause - underwatered

  • Remedy - remove the plant from its decorative pot and give a good shower in the sink, allowing it to sit in a dish of water for a few hours before draining and returning to pot. These cosmetic damages won’t go away, but you can prevent them from happening more.

Withered and/or brown leaves - air is too dry

  • Symptom - wrinkly, withered leaves that may have some brown edges

  • Cause - the air is too dry

  • Remedy - regularly mist the Magenta Triostar to boost moisture levels. Also, make sure your plant is not too close to a heater or air conditioner.

Read more about brown leaves on the Stromanthe Triostar here.

How to maintain a beautiful and healthy Magenta Triostar

Take care of your Magenta Triostar and it will take care of you! Below are simple tips to continue caring for and growing your Magenta Triostar over time.

How to care for stromanthe triostar

Pruning

Remove unattractive or damaged leaves from the base of the plant with a clean blade. Never remove more than 30% of the plant at a time.

Trimming

If there is just a small portion of a leaf that was damaged such as the edges, trim off any discoloration or blemishes by following the natural lines and shape of the leaf.

Cleaning

Regularly remove dust to ensure your plant can soak in as much light as possible. Use a damp cloth and gently wipe the leaf clean while supporting the under side with your other hand.

How to grow and repot the Stromanthe Triostar

  • Growing - in prime conditions, Magenta Triostars are fast growers, unfurling new leaves from the center base. After some time, if you don’t see any new growth, consider adjusting one of its elements. During spring and summer, use a diluted fertilizer to give your plant a vitamin boost.

  • Repotting - L&G Magenta Triostars come in 6” grow pots and only need to be repotted every few years if you notice the roots outgrowing the pot, or to refresh the soil and give it new nutrients. If you’d like your plant to grow larger, find a new grow pot that is 2” larger than its current pot. If you’re happy with the current size, you can reuse the same pot and simply change the soil.

    • Getting your hands dirty with or without a yard - spread out newspaper on the floor, remove the plant from the pot and shake off as much of the old soil as possible so that you have clean roots. At the bottom of the grow pot, and a layer of soil, then place the plant in the center of the pot and cover with new soil. Pat down firmly and water thoroughly. Place the plant in an area with bright indirect light. Your plant will take 2-4 weeks to settle from the shock and adjust to its new home.

How to propagate the Stromanthe Triostar

Propagating a Magenta Triostar plant is best done through division and during spring or summer.

  • Divide the roots - remove the plant from its container and determine which area you will divide to create new plants. Make sure there is at least one bud in each clump of tubers, aka their roots. Carefully untangle the roots and pull apart with your hands or cut through with a clean sharp knife.

  • Place in fresh soil - Place the new divisions in fresh soil, press soil firmly and water thoroughly.

  • Stabilize - Keep freshly repotted plants in a warm area with bright indirect light, and for Magenta Triostars the soil should be kept moist thought not drenched.

Celebrating a Simpler Relationship Between Our Goods and Our Planet
fiddle-greenhouse.jpg

We're in the business of making connections between plants, people, and the planet every day. So naturally, Earth Day is one of our favorite days of action. It's a day where we reflect on how our individual actions can impact the lives of our houseplants, our city parks, our forests, and relationships with each other.

Our plants are grown with the simple elements of sunlight and water. Some of them can take anywhere between 3 months and 10 years to grow before they find their way to your home. Occasionally they're fertilized, but they're naturally grown, never manufactured. This means no two plants are alike! At Léon & George, we merely preserve what nature has created, and offer you the service and tools needed to live alongside plants indoors.

alocasia-3-months.jpg

We’re committed to supporting long-lasting relationships between each plant that goes out and their new homes. Similar to how pet adoption agencies vet potential parents, when you shop with us online or in store, we feel a similar obligation to matching plants with thoughtful owners and the environments they'll need to be happy indoors.

This year, we're celebrating Earth Day by acknowledging all of our plant-loving customers who make the world a little more vibrant, one plant at a time. To thank you for joining us on this journey, we're doubling down on our commitment to offset our carbon footprint. For every plant purchased on Earth Day 2019, we’ll plan two trees with the National Forest Foundation. That means your purchase will go twice as far toward producing more clean air (and happy plants) than ever.

Read more about your impact and our partnership with the National Forest Foundation here.

Here's to a plant-filled year and beyond. Together we can build a more sustainable future for people, the planet... and plants!

Real Plants, Real People: Roommates Wren and Jayme
w-j-pothos-kitchen.jpg

Wren and Jayme are friends who love a good theme party. When they found their charming San Francisco apartment, they knew it was a place they could take care of and make their own.

--

How did you know this home was for you?

When we visited the apartment it was empty. They had just re-sealed the floors and there was warm natural light reflecting from everywhere. We sat down in the middle of the floor and it felt comfortable. It was a home we could see ourselves investing in, filling with nice furniture and pieces that would last.

Wren wanted a plant that handles low light for their small common area, she went with a Zanzibar Gem

Wren wanted a plant that handles low light for their small common area, she went with a Zanzibar Gem

What inspires you when you decorate?

We both like playing with color and themes. One of the first pieces we purchased for the apartment was a shower curtain, which we picked out from Urban Outfitters. As we were browsing a "Welcome to the Jungle" doormat was suggested and that ended up becoming our theme. We eventually added plants, our colorful velvet couches, and fun animal decor.

What are your plant care secrets?

A light touch. They don't need to be bothered all the time, but it does help to have a rhythm. We typically check in on them on Sundays. Being aware when something has changed or seems to be wrong, then testing out adjustments is also something we do. When they get big, you notice them even more, so you can't help but be aware of how they're doing.

Who are Léon & George?
Nicolas and Ron, Léon and George co-founders

Nicolas and Ron, Léon and George co-founders

When we started the idea of doing a plant business we came up with a lot of different names. For three months every week we were coming up with something new - Plant Boys, Nice Jungle, Jungle Bits, Folium 365, FoliJoy, Bay Area Plants. One name that stuck around for a bit was Forestical, but then we realized it rhymed with testicle. We were starting to feel a little hopeless since we were almost ready to open the site and wanted to begin building a brand.

Like most startups we got started in our homes, coding on the couch, and figuring out how to take product pictures in our small spaces. Ron has a cat, her name is Léon. She was named after the character in the movie Léon: The Professional. As we set up the plants and tried to take pictures, she'd walk coyly into the shots, brush her body and tail against the pots and circle around to be the center of attention. She’d come over to snuggle every now and then and ask to have her photo taken.

leon-grid.jpg

I have a parrot, a Green Cheek Conure to be exact, and his name is George. He was named after the French singer-songwriter and poet Georges Brassens. The full spelling of my bird's name is officially Georges, with an s. Unlike Léon, George didn't ask to be in the pictures, but we included him. He's just so colorful and photogenic. One time we had a Kentia Palm that we were taking pictures of and all of a sudden George started flying around the tree in circles. The wind he was making with his wings moved the palms in a way that felt like being in a jungle. It truly felt like bringing nature indoors.

george-grid.jpg

As we continued those early days in our homes, we realized our pets were an integral part of keeping us inspired and helping us build the company. So we named the company after them. Léon the cat and George the bird, officially the cutest co-founders around.

Why Are My Kentia Palm Leaves Turning Yellow?
Kentia Palm yellow leaves

Ah, the Kentia Palm. We love it for the effortless tropical vibe it creates, striking beauty, and easy going attitude, but yellow leaves are never fun and sadly they can be quite common on this variety. Discoloring fronds won't change back to green so you'll have to trim them off, but here are a few things that could be causing them, plus adjustments you can make to keep your palm lush and green.

Overwatering

Yellowing spots are more often than not the result of stagnant moisture in the soil, typically due to watering too much. Try drying out the soil a bit before the next watering - this could take a few weeks. If the yellowing continues, root rot may have set in. Check the soil and if there is plenty of moisture, offer your Kentia a soil change and trim damaged dark and soft roots. Healthy roots will be white and firm.

Lack of Moisture

Browning tips are typically caused by under watering, but a thirsty Kentia Palm may also show some yellowing or dying fronds. This plant loves a humid environment, so make sure to water when the top two inches of the soil are dry and add misting to your routine.

Too Much Fertilizer

Kentias are slow growers and don't require much fertilizer. If you overdo it on the fertilizer, this may cause discoloration or fertilizer burn on the leaves. Moving forward, fertilize only in the growing season (spring and summer), and never more than once a month.

Light Imbalance

Kentia Palms are prone to sunburn, so keep them out of harsh direct sunlight. Instead, try soft dappled light, indirect light, or medium light (see our light guide if you’re not sure!). Keep in mind the more light your Kentia gets, the thirstier it may be and vice versa.

A Note on Leaning

Leaning branches are common for Kentias as the fronds can get top heavy. Stake or loosely tie the branch back into place, and make sure to rotate your plant regularly for even growth on all sides.

With long majestic leaf fronds rising up from the bottom, the Kentia Palm is the ultimate statement plant. Surprisingly resilient and easy to care for.
